For most pubs, December 31st means just one thing... New Years Eve. Not in Muls. The night of December 31st is Goolie Night. The Mulcahys 'Dictionary of Pub Talk' defines a Goolie as a likeable rogue, with a propensity to say and do the unexpected, causing embarrassment to himself or others. Come December each year regulars are invited to vote for their Goolie of The Year! Results are announced on New Years Eve and the winning Goolie is crowned!
Here Mick Mul explains the origins of the Goolie of The Year Award:
It all began one fine Sunday, way back in 1996. Mousey Ryan was having one of his usual heated discussions with someone else in the bar and said: "If there was an award for Goolie of the Year you'd definitely win it!"
Well, it got me thinking; what about a voting system where everybody writes down the person who they think is the biggest Goolie of the Year and puts their voting slip in a tin and then on New Years Eve, the results would be announced? Of course it wasn't as easy as was first thought but within a few years (maybe 5 or 6) and with help from what is now "an organized Goolie committee" The Goolie of the Year (G.O.T.Y.) award was born!
